While CMMN handles the „unpredictable,“ Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) is the global standard for documenting structured, repeatable sequences. Whether you are automating a supply chain or mapping a standard operating procedure (SOP), BPMN provides the clarity needed for technical execution and business communication. In this chapter, we demonstrate how to leverage Visual Paradigm Desktop to build high-quality BPMN 2.0 diagrams.

Step 1: Creating a New BPMN Diagram

Visual Paradigm provides a dedicated environment for Business Process Modeling. To start your first process map, follow these steps within the Desktop application:

  • Navigate to the Diagram tab in the top toolbar.
  • Select New and search for Business Process Diagram.
  • Select Blank to create a new diagram from scratch, or select a BPD example.
  • Provide a clear name for your process, such as „Order Fulfillment Sequence“ or „Employee Onboarding.“

Step 2: Organizing with Pools and Lanes

One of the most critical aspects of BPMN business process diagrams is identifying „who“ does „what.“ Visual Paradigm makes this easy with Pools and Lanes:

  • Pools: Represent a whole organization or a distinct participant (e.g., „Customer“ vs. „Company“).
  • Lanes: Sub-divide a pool to represent specific departments, roles, or software systems (e.g., „Accounting,“ „Warehouse,“ or „ERP System“).

Simply drag a Pool from the diagram toolbar onto the canvas. You can right-click the pool header to „Add Lane“ as your process complexity grows.

Step 3: Mapping the Process Flow

Visual Paradigm’s Resource Catalog is a game-changer for BPMN modeling. Instead of constantly returning to the toolbar, you can click on an existing shape and drag the „Resource“ icon to automatically create the next element connected by a Sequence Flow.

  • Start Events: Begin your process with a circle. Choose from „None,“ „Message,“ or „Timer“ start events depending on what triggers the flow.
  • Tasks: Use rounded rectangles to represent work items. You can specify task types (e.g., User Task, Service Task, Script Task) via the Property Pane.
  • Gateways: Use diamonds to manage decision points. The „Exclusive Gateway“ (X) is used for „Either/Or“ paths, while the „Parallel Gateway“ (+) handles tasks occurring simultaneously.
  • End Events: Always conclude your flow with a thick-bordered circle to signify the completion of the process.

Step 4: Enhancing with Data Objects and Artifacts

To provide a deeper level of business intelligence, you can associate Data Objects with your tasks. This shows what documents or data inputs are required at specific steps. In Visual Paradigm, you can also use Group artifacts to visually highlight specific segments of your process for stakeholders without affecting the logical flow.

Step 5: Process Simulation and Animation

Unique to the Visual Paradigm Desktop environment is the ability to animate your BPMN diagrams. Once your model is complete, you can use the Business Process Simulation feature to identify bottlenecks, calculate resource costs, and visualize the flow of „tokens“ through your gateways. This ensures your process is optimized before it is ever implemented in the real world.

Streamline Your Workflows with Visual Paradigm

By using Visual Paradigm for your BPMN modeling, you ensure that your business processes are documented with surgical precision. Our tools support the full breadth of the BPMN 2.0 specification, allowing you to move from simple sketches to executable process models seamlessly.

Ready to compare? You have now mastered both CMMN for cases and BPMN for processes. Use this knowledge to choose the right notation for your next organizational challenge.
